    Marketing With a Smile

    What does a smile have to do with marketing? Everything! A smile sells abundance, confidence, humanity and so much more. And I will commit to gifting you over 20 books for Free if you will hang with me through this chapter.

    After being a caretaker of my Mom for three years, and watching her smile and spirit disappear through Alzheimer’s, I knew what life was like without a smile. My Dad and I cried a lot over those years, and I took a vacation from my career as a professional Disc Jockey to focus on the person who brought me more smiles than anyone else. She was the eternal optimist!

    I share this because we all have a life filled with things that we can be grateful for or pissed off about. I promise the abundance you experience has a lot to do with how you see life and share yourself with others.

    I recently watched ‘Scrooge’, the Christmas Carol Movie with Albert Finney for the 40th time, and saw this movie in a different light given the above statement. He switched his life to joy in less than a day. He chose happiness and decided to share his commitment to happiness with the world he could reach with a smile. Although it is a movie, I truly believe it is a great depiction of what is possible when we shift from gloom and doom to abundance, gratitude, and possibility.

    In ‘Forest Gump’, Forest shares on several occasions ‘Mama always says “Stupid is as Stupid Does.” Well, grumpy is, as grumpy does, and happy is, as happy does. So being Happy creates more happiness because what we give, we receive.



    What does this have to do with marketing? Everything! If you market people happy with your brand, you are in essence marketing the value you give people. So when you commit yourself to create smiles with your brand, your brand will be connected to happiness and value… every time.

    It doesn’t matter what you spend on a product or service, it matters how many smiles it generates. Benjamin Franklin said it best with his quote ‘The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten’. Being in the wedding business, I can assure you that a commitment to smiles allows you to charge based on how many smiles you create. My deejay company was roughly double the other services ($1000 over other offers) and it didn’t prevent us from closing over 80% of our appointments.

    We focused on how important the big day as they were celebrating and how many smiles would result if they made the right choice for entertainment. When the offer was reversed and I would ask if they would accept $2000 to destroy their event, they would think it absurd. I would agree and share that going with other companies would be like reducing the enjoyment and accepting that the difference in price was worth the lower result of smiles… and people leaving early. We didn’t make promises we couldn’t keep, so the presentations sold more because of all the social proof that we were effective with this promise.

    No matter what business you think you are in, I would argue you are in the smile business. A smile means so many great things.

    1. That you create an abundance of happiness and success for your customers
    2. That you solve problems that allow customers to be free of inefficiency and misery
    3. That you are selling value… more smiles per dollar than anyone else selling what you are selling.

    It is said that Soccer is the universal sport.

    Music is the universal language.

    A Smile is the universal expression.

    When art and science collaborate, magical phenomenon’s are created. Many believe the Mona Lisa is the most famous painting of all time and many agree it is because of her unique smile.

    From a scientific standpoint, what happens to our brain when we smile? If you experience a positive situation or imagine one, the neuronal signals in your brain travel from the cortex to the brainstem (the oldest part of our brains) and from there, move toward the cranial muscles that cause the smiling muscles in our face to contract.



    The beauty of this signal reaching the smile and contracting is that there is a positive feedback loop that goes back to the brain and reinforces our feelings of happiness and joy.

    The health and wealth benefits of smiling are astounding and I believe are the best bang for the buck given their proven ROE and ROI.

    When you smile, it, in essence, recycles joy over and over again because of the loop mentioned above. And since our brains are like computers, it keeps track of how often you are in that state of joy by being a smile scorecard keeper.

    Smiling also reduces the stress that your body and mind feel very similar to the benefits of getting a good nights’ rest. Simply put, a smile generates positive emotions that invigorate our well-being. This explains why we feel so much happiness when we are around children who on average smile 400 times a day to our average of 20 times a day. Although with practice, these numbers can easily go up to 40 times or much higher if we care desire to be more playful and positive.

    Since it is impossible to be happy and unhappy at the same time, it is a choice we are making to reduce stress-induced hormones into our mental and physical health when we choose to smile more.

    Some interesting psychological studies have been done on baseball cards and yearbook photos to track the success of the players/students with the biggest genuine smile. The findings showed that the students who smiled more had lived longer happier lives, with happier marriages and had fewer setbacks. This was also the case with the athlete in the baseball cards who lived an average of 7 years longer than the athletes who didn’t smile as much.

    The good news is that smiling is a learned activity and so it can even be re-learned. Since life gets more serious, we smile less as we get older, and because of this we actually forget how to smile genuinely over time. We adopt social smiles that sabotage the effect we have on others as well as the experience we could be having.

    So you can either improve your smile or get your smile back, here are some steps you can take to bring joy and abundance back into your life. This will impact your business, your career and most importantly the people you love.

    Researcher Andrew Newberg conducts workshops that assist people in getting their genuine smile back. Much like I do when I want to take a photo of someone holding a Keep Smiling card, I say ‘Think of what you love most’ and the result is magical.

    If you take a minute to think of who you love the most or an experience that brought you immense joy, it will help you achieve your best smile. Do this before making phone calls or even writing emails or texts. The receiver of your communication can always tell if you are smiling, even if they can’t see you.

    Another great activity is to practice in front of a mirror. The good news is that when you achieve your genuine smile, you will immediately feel happy and relaxed.

    I’ve noticed some people cover their mouths when they smile because they are self-conscious of their teeth or smile. This practice is not healthy and is actually counterproductive. It is vital that you become comfortable smiling so that you feel fully expressed when you are happy. The power of your smile will invoke your emotional state and create new emotional habits subconsciously. The more congruent your happiness is with your conscious mind, the more it will become your natural state subconsciously.
