After a very serious car accident on February 12th, 2019, I was left without a car, computer, phone (and even damage to my camera equipment). I’ve never been without all three, and it gave me a lot of time to think about how grateful I was to be alive. What if I could never have those items again, what would I do? Since I had none of them, and in essence had a blank canvas, how would I paint or RESET a new life I wanted?
That is exactly what I did. I had an outdated car (Prius 2012 Hybrid), an Apple 2015 (MacBook Pro), and an Apple 2016 (iPhone 7 Plus). And although they all functioned perfectly fine, I would admit they were all being challenged with the current technology and time. The Prius certainly had the smallest delta unless you compared it to the current Tesla with all the AI infusion.
My behavior in the past would have been to fix these problems quickly and get back to work. Since I had so much time without a phone to think about what if questions, I decided to move very slowly and methodically.
My first priority was to talk to the smartest people I knew and get counsel on what they would do if this opportunity was in front of them to start fresh. They shared who they would work with for the accident (lawyer, physical therapist, etc.).
With that information, I knew I would need to replace my computer and phone immediately. Since I was an Apple fan, I felt moving away from that brand would be an unnecessary jolt to my canvas. It was clear the Apple 10X Max was the superior phone Apple was offering for about $1500 with insurance. I upgraded the memory to 256 GB as well. The current MacBook Pro was faster and I also upgraded the memory to 2TB so I wasn’t spending as much time shuffling raw photos on and off my computer.
I committed that I would clean my contacts and only put necessary apps, software and work on both my device and computer. This required an overhaul of my phone which found hundreds of duplicates and so many apps I wasn’t using. Since my phone had been backed up, this was not as much a blank canvas move, but integrating my contacts on my new computer gave me a goal of cleaning about 100 contacts a day. This meant adding photos, email addresses, and at least their city and state information.
My old computer had information everywhere, so my decision to create a logical pathway to any document or file was critical before I started working on the computer. I decided to have only a couple of folders on my desktop that would be access points to whatever I needed. I didn’t want any junk or anything to look disorganized moving forward. I committed I would allow 10 minutes or more to clean up folders each day so that the desktop and my ability to find what I need would never be a waste of time.
Around this time, I realized my life was being transformed with this new ‘opportunity’ to start over, and I decided to document it in hopes of helping others with what might be holding them back from a life they want. The concept was referred to as a ‘RESET’ and the title was created. The premise is, if your life is not working, then RESET it with what is working, what will work so you are not doing the same things, the same way, and getting the same results or life you already have.
If you have a life that is not working, it is vital to consider a RESET voluntarily before the inevitable failure happens. My recommendation is to take a week off and stop doing the grind in order to find good counsel and ask them what they would recommend you buy, change, do, read, etc.
Get out a blank piece of paper and create a system for your life as if you were designing a car or a new life. Be extremely detailed and be sure to include how your customer acquisition system works, how your sales cycle works, how your cash flow, invoicing, and profit happens and works. I learned so much from stopping, getting counsel and methodically redesigning, rebuilding and redistributing my energy and focus.

My first month doing RESET was so powerful, I was able to pay for my computer and phone in a month. I was already seeing the possibilities of having a Tesla if I continued with my focus, new habits, and mindset. At the writing of this article, I have a Tesla (used Model S) in my garage and feel my RESET is the reason I have the beginnings of a life I love.
Although my book is not published and probably won’t for a couple more months, I know that in writing this life game plan, and seeing this accident as an opportunity to RESET my life, I was able to remove the chaos, clutter, distractions we all allow in our life when we don’t pay attention to waste we are allowing on our canvas and life.
